Abstract
The propagation of failure wave in soda lime glass was observed in VISAR experiment with both PMMA and fused silica windows. The velocity profile changes obviously when the glass surface roughness is changed. It is believed that the overshoot phenomena are related to the rarefaction wave propagation originating from the failure front and this overshoot essentially is a kind of "stress relaxation". The relaxation time can be estimated by inverse impact VISAR experiments.
