Abstract

The transmission characteristics of electromagnetic wave (EM-waves) in discharge plasma have been investigated theoretically and experimentally. A model was developed to calculate the reflection, absorption and transmission of the EM-waves with a perpendicular incidence angle to the uniform non-magnetized plasma as a function of the plasma frequency at different collision frequencies. The attenuation of EM-waves after passing the discharge plasma at different pressures was also measured experimentally. It is shown that the dense plasma produced by the glow discharge at pressure of 25~600Pa in argon can attenuate the 9.1GHz EM-wave by 17dB. The discharge plasma is feasible to block the EM waves of X-band efficiently and to be used in EM shielding.
