Abstract

The pre-soaking procedure was developed to identify the grain refining effects on Al2O3 ceramic during spark plasma sintering (SPS). The results showed the micrometer-size Al2O3 single crystal particles refined by the thermo-electric-mechanical mechanism. The large sized single crystal particles have more obvious grain refining and show more refined spots. A time dependent grain refining process has been identified after the powders were soaked longer at temperatures below the grain growth levels. Our work demonstrates a possible method to make nanostructured ceramic using SPS with pre-soaking process.
