Abstract

Porous Si3N4 ceramics were produced through dry press shaping and gas pressure sintering. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of porous Si3N4 ceramics were investigated. The porosity, phase composition, flexural strength and elastic modulus of porous Si3N4 ceramics sintered at different sintering schedules were determined, and the microstructures of porous Si3N4 ceramics were analyzed. The results show that the density, α-Si3N4→β-Si3N4 transformation, β-Si3N4 grain growth and flexural strength of material increase when sintering temperature increases. The flexural strength and the porosity of porous Si3N4 prepared at sintering temperature of 1 900 ℃ and holding time of 15 min are 106 MPa and 49%, respectively.
