Abstract

Two kinds of intumescent flame retardant coatings were prepared individually with two kinds of epoxy curing system as binders, when ammonium polyphosphate(APP), dipentaerythritol(DPER) and melamine(MEL) were used as intumescent flame retardants. The fire-proofing and combustion performances of two coatings and mechanical strength of residue char were investigated by back temperature tester, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analyzer and stress rheometer. The data show that aromatic curing agent can improve flame retardancy more efficiently than aliphatic curing agent. The epoxy coatings with aromatic curing agent contribute a lot to the charring and result in more compact and stronger char. Therefore, the heat and smoke release are reduced during combustion, and the fire resistant performances are also enhanced significantly.
