Abstract

The ballistic properties of ceramic AD95 subjected to different confined stresses were studied on 7.62 mm API, and the impact damage characteristics of recovered tiles were examined. It shows that by increasing the confined stress, the ballistic property as well as the integrity of ceramic tile improved gradually; especially when the confined stress was more than 193 MPa , the projectile material was forced to flow radically outwards on the surface of the ceramic without penetrating significantly, i.e. interface defeat. There were two kinds of crack cone lined up in the axis of penetration within the 4 mm thickness ceramic tile with confined stress, and between these two cones was the zone of ceramic crushing. With the increase of confined stress, ceramic strength was improved, while growth of crushing zone was restrained, and the time of dwell was extended. As a result, the ballistic property was improved, and the damage degree decreased.
