Design of broadband MIMO antenna based on common and differential mode (CM/DM) method

Abstract

The common and differential mode (CM/DM) method indicates that when the odd mode impedance and common mode impedance of a dual-antenna system are the same, the two antennas achieve the best isolation. In this paper, a broadband MIMO antenna based CM/DM method is proposed. By transforming the magnetoelectric dipole (ME) prototype antenna with differential feed into a dual antenna, the odd mode impedance of the broadband can be obtained. By replacing the electric dipole with a folded dipole and adjusting the parameters appropriately, the bandwidth of DM impedance is broadened. The final dual antenna system achieves isolation of more than 15dB in about 44% of the bands and S11 is less than -8dB, and the gain in band is around 6dB. The working band of this antenna covers three popular bands: N77, N78 and N79. It is expected to be used in the future 5G communication.
