Abstract

Lightweight head -mounted displays (HMD) with large field -of -views are widely used in fields of virtual reality, augmented reality, defense and anti-terrorism. Eyepieces of the conventional style cannot meet the stringent requirements of HMDs for large field-of-view, compact size and light weight. A novel lightweight, wide field-of-view eyepiece for HMD is achieved using a free-form-surface(FFS) prism. The design method is discussed and the design result is presented.
