title = "Broadband interferometric dielectric spectroscopy for aqueous solutions",
abstract = "A highly sensitive and tunable interference based microwave measurement system is demonstrated for the broadband (4-18 GHz) measurement of the complex permittivity of aqueous-solutions. Two quadrature hybrids (QH), a tunable phase shifter, and a tunable attenuator are utilized to obtain deep interference nulls between a reference branch and a branch containing the material-under-test (MUT). Permittivity measurements of 2-propanol-water solutions with mole fractions X= 0.01 and 0.04 over the full band between 4 GHz and 18 GHz were performed to demonstrate the technique. De-ionized water and 2-propanol-water solutions (complex permittivities are acquired from reported data) are used as reference and calibration material to extract the MUT permittivity through the mathematical model in [4] with our modification. Coplanar waveguides (CPW) were used as microwave sensing structures and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) liquid well was introduced to contain the MUT liquid. The complex permittivity of 2-propanol-water solution with different mole fractions was obtained and compared to literature data.",
