Abstract

A broadband dielectric spectroscopy technique combining interdigital capacitor (IDC) and coplanar waveguide transmission line based methods are presented. For each device, an accurate on-wafer calibration techniques is applied, followed by a de-embedding process, subsequently obtaining scattering parameters of the liquid loaded sensing area. A lumped model and a distributed model are used to accurately translate the S-parameters to the complex permittivity of the liquids for low frequencies and high frequencies, respectively. Permittivity results of deionized water show good agreement with literature values. Measurements on saline solutions have demonstrated its capability for liquid detection and quantification in a non-invasive and contactless way. This technique is targeted at the rapid characterization of cell cultures.
