Abstract

The application of electric vehicles (EVs) is an effective way to reduce fossil fuel consumption and pollution emissions. However, the limited driving range and long charging time have a significant effect on usage and travel behavior of EV drivers. The aim of this study is to analyze the usage characteristics of EVs and find out the relationship between energy consumption and vehicle speed. The study uses actual driving data derived from 15 private EVs. The data include in-use vehicle data and vehicle operating data. The results show that the charging characteristics of EV users present regular distributions and is affected by the travel characteristics. According to the energy consumption analysis, the economic speed of the three types is 40km/h. The results also indicate that effective grid policies are necessary to guide the charging behaviors to reduce the load of the power grid.
