Abstract

Intumescent flame retarded polypropylene/ammonium polyphosphate-calcium montmorillonite (APP-CaMMT) composites were prepared by melt blending. Their thermal stability, flammability and flame retardancy were characterized by thermogrovimetric analysis, cone calorimetry, limited oxygen index (LOI) and UL94 test. APP-CaMMT nanocompounds exhibit enhanced flame retardancy in PP compared with commercial APP and micro mixture of APP and CaMMT. One number assumption of UL 94 was established. And the correlation coefficients between TGA, Cone, LOI and UL94 were carried out. The results indicate that these bench-scale methods cannot be employed singly to estimate fire properties of materials.
