Abstract

An all-optical switch made up of a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) and based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is presented. With the crossing phase modulation (XPM) effect between the signal pulse and the control pulse, it can be used as an all-optical switch. Characteristics of PCF caused by the construction parameters are discussed. The theoretical model is built up and the transmittance characteristics of the all-optical switch studied using such a model. The performance of the nonlinear optical loop mirror based on photonic crystal fiber is discussed. Results of study showed that the high-speed switching effect can be obtained with shorter loop length and lower control power of NOLM based on PCF and characteristics of the optical switch can be controlled flexibly by the power of the control pulse. It is an important method for the all-optical switch used in high-speed optical communication system using nonlinear optical loop mirror based on photonic crystal fiber.
