abstract = "A series multilevel converter (SMC) for permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG) in wind power system is presented and a phase dc bus voltage fluctuation suppression method is proposed in this paper. Three phases of the SMC are series connected at dc side to reduce the number of switches compared with conventional modular multilevel converter. The phase dc bus voltage fluctuation suppression is realized with injected second order harmonic circulating current in the dc bus of SMC. Since three phase dc bus voltages contain second order harmonic components, the injected second order circulating current exchanges power among three phases of SMC with the second order components in each phase dc bus voltage and the transient fluctuations of phase dc bus voltages are suppressed. An open winding PMSG is employed in the system and the modeling and base control strategy of the SMC is also presented. In the Matlab/Simulink environment, a simulation is built to validate the SMC and the control method. The simulation results show that the SMC operates smoothly and the control method is effective.",
