Abstract

Full-duplex (FD) media access control (MAC) mechanism in wireless networks is investigated. Compared with the half-duplex mode communications, FD technology greatly improves the network throughput. However, it is not enough for the physical layer to adopt the technique, FD MAC protocol support at the data link layer is also important to optimize the performance of system. In this paper, we propose a new FD MAC protocol for wireless LAN in infrastructure mode. The proposed MAC protocol introduces a new secondary receiver selection mechanism in order to take full advantages of FD operations and ensure the efficient transmission of data. In addition, the energy consumption of the FD MAC protocol is optimized. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol is capable of substantially improving the network throughput and reducing energy consumption.
