N2 - Swirl in an utmost important pattern of turbulence flow which dominantly governs the general performance of diesel engine. For efficiently generating swirl during the induction in diesel engine, a new method is propounded by introducing a device named Swirl-Generator in the present paper. Series of numerical simulation are conducted to investigate the effects of each geometric parameters of Swirl-Generator on the general performance (including swirl-generation capability and discharge capability), and an optimal design direction is obtained from the simulation results. Then, and the flow motion and the flow pattern induced by Swirl-Generator is investigated experimentally in a visible-analog bench by PIV. Finally, the A626-type Swirl-Generator which indicated has the best comprehensive performance is mounted on an actual single-cylinder diesel engine for verifying its practical performance, the results show that the diesel engine can obtain better fuel economy, especially at low-and intermediate-speed conditions, after matching a Swirl-Generator.
