Abstract
A Gray code mapping scheme is proposed to reduce coding penalty for probabilistically shaped 9QAM. The carrierless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) probabilistically shaped 9QAM with the Gray code mapping scheme is experimentally investigated in a single carrier intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system. The experiment results show that the proposed 9QAM with Gray coding has a gain of 0.034 bits/symbol and 0.111 bits/symbol over 9QAM without Gray coding and star-8QAM at a received optical power of -5.5 dBm, respectively. All of the three modulation formats have the same spectral efficiency (SE) equal to 3 bits/symbol.
