A 7/27GHz Dual-Band Phase-Controlled Oscillator for 5G Applications

Abstract

In this paper, a unique structure 7/27GHz dual-band voltage control oscillator (VCO) using oscillator mode reusing technology is designed, implemented and verified in a standard 90nm CMOS technology for 5G low and medium band applications. The dual-band VCO achieves more than three times band space thanks to the unique structure of inductor using two magic couple field. The mode switcher is also carefully design for lower noise and band switching loss. Mode switching avoids current-source switching resulting in long VCO setup time, which achieves a fast band switch. The measured phase noise of proposed dual-band VCO are -112.5 and -100dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset at 7.4GHz and 27.1GHz respectively, while only costuming 6.6mW at 0.5V supply, which make it suitable for low-power mobile communication applications. The proposed dual-band oscillator core occupies a chip area of 0.28mm*0.28mm without testing pads.
