Abstract

Based on the obstruction effect of flying objects to microwave communication links of sky or space borne platforms, e.g. low earth orbit satellites or geosynchronous orbit satellite, a framework of detection, identification and tracking of flying objects is proposed with the opportunistic use of the microwave signals from the platforms. As microwave signals and optical signals have the same diffraction principle, a simplified optical model is proposed and optical analysis is applied to quantitatively characterize the obstruction effect, which is a key issue in the proposed method. In particular, with angular spectrum analysis, the impact of various parameters including the speed and the height of the flying objects on the microwave intensity at the ground receiver is analysed, paving the way for further research into the proposed detection, identification and tracking method for flying objects.
