Abstract

Hardware-in-the-loop is a crucial method to evaluate the performance of large-scale communication networks, which achieves a good balance between accuracy and cost. The current hardware-in-the-loop emulation platforms or technologies need to parse the protocols of access devices to integrate the real subnets with the simulated network. This scheme constrains its application in the emulation of tactical network, e.g., integrating the military radios running private protocols. Thus, a novel real-subnet-in-the-loop (RSIL) network emulation method based on QualNet is proposed to solve the problem. Specifically, the scheme is to establish a real-virtual gateway mapping table to solve the routing and addressing issues of data interaction between real and virtual networks, which can seamlessly integrate real subnets running any routing protocols with virtual simulation networks without protocol parsing. The experimental results show that RSIL eliminates the constraints on the routing protocols that the integrated real subnets run, and provides an effective way to build real-subnet-in-the-loop network emulation system, which further improves and enriches the application of hardware-in-the-loop network emulation in tactical network research.
