Abstract

The effects of flame retardant systems and crosslinking agents on the properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) insulation materials were investigated. It is found that the introduction of aluminum hypophosphite composite (AHP) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardant system can reduce the linear ablation rate of EPDM insulation materials. The AHP flame retardant can effectively improve the ablation performance and the heat insulation performance of EPDM. SEM shows that AHP can promote EPDM to form a carbon layer with better heat insulation performance. With the increase of ablation time, the ablation rate of EPDM with AHP is lower than that with APP flame retardant, and it is 0.046 mm/s at 60 s. The thermal insulation layer of EPDM with AHP has the best heat insulation performance, only 46.4℃. Mechanical test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), heat insulation performance test, and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) test were used to analyze EPDM and its pyrolysis products under the AHP-containing system with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and bis(t-butylperoxyisopropyl)benzene (BIPB) crosslinking agent respectively. It is found that the mechanical properties of EPDM with BIPB decrease by about 30% and the back temperature is increased by 17℃, but its thermal stability is almost unaffected, and the number of harmful pyrolysis products is significantly reduced.
