Abstract

The fully polarimetric radar is the development direction for the next generation entomological radar. This paper introduces the estimation methods of insect biological parameters (including orientation, mass and body length) for fully polarimetric radar. These methods are more accurate than the traditional methods. However, they have only been verified by laboratory experiments, and have not been verified by any actual fully polarimetric radar in field measurement. In this paper, using a Ku band fully polarimetric entomological radar, a field quantitative experiment was designed and carried out. In the experiment, insects were hanged by two cooperative flight unmanned aerial vehicles, and the radar data of 44 insects of different sizes in different orientations were measured. Based on the measured data, the application of the insect biological parameters estimation methods for real fully polarimetric radar in field was successfully verified, and the measurement accuracy was analyzed.
