Ding Gangyi, a native of Pengshui County, Chongqing, joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in December 1985. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanics from Peking University in June 1988 and his doctorate from Beijing Institute of Technology in June 1993. He started to work in June 1993 as a researcher and doctoral supervisor of Beijing Institute of Technology. In March 2002, he participated in the founding of the National Demonstration Software College and served as the vice president. He served as the president from December 2008 to April 2018, and served as the director of the school library from September 2017. He is currently a member of the Party Committee of Beijing Institute of Technology, a member of the Academic Committee of Beijing Institute of Technology, a member of the Academic Degree Committee of Beijing Institute of Technology, a director of Beijing Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Digital Media Technology, and a director of Beijing Key Laboratory of Digital Performance and Simulation Technology.
