Abstract

RuO2·xH2O on the surface of activated carbon was synthesized by a sol-gel process. After heat treatment at 150°C, the carbon ruthenium composite was applied in the alkaline electrochemical capacitor as electrode activated materials. Electrochemical tests showed that carbon ruthenium composite electrode had good performance on capacitance and high power discharge ability in alkaline solution. As the positive electrode of alkaline electrochemical capacitor, the composite which contained 15% Ru had a specific capacitance about 274 F/g when the current density was 1.0 A/g. This capacitance was 1.22 times of that of the activated carbon. And the carbon ruthenium composite could also restrain capacitor's self-discharge. As the negative electrode of alkaline electrochemical capacitor, the composite had a specific capacitance about 278 F/g at the same current density, and the capacitor's self-discharge would be accelerated.
