Abstract
F number, a key parameter in remote sensing, CCD camera design, is strongly associated with other important parameters of the camera and has a great influence on the image quality. The results in different F number with such parameters as dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, modulation transmittance function, image equality factor, and focal depth are compared. They show that the process of selecting F number is not a monotonous one, but one of compromise. After validation, it is demonstrated that F=4 may be comparatively rational.
