Progresses in research of emulsion polymerization for oilfield exploitation

Abstract

The characteristics of emulsion polymerization were reviewed and different kinds of emulsion polymerization methods were described. The developments and applications of the emulsion polymerization in oilfield exploitation were emphasized, namely drilling fluid additives, acidic solution thickening, profile control by water plugging and flooding control, drilling leak-plugging, sand fixation and wastewater treatment. The shortcomings and prospects of the application of the emulsion polymerization in oilfield exploitation were discussed. To meet the requirements of exploiting deep well or ultra deep well, the emulsion polymerization products should be heat-resistant and salttolerant, and have good mechanical properties.
