Abstract

Epoxycyclohexyl phenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane oligo-mers(cy-ep-Ph-POSS) was synthesized via hydrolytic condensation reaction, which was used to prepare epoxy(EP)/cy-ep-Ph-POSS blends whose thermal, mechanical and flame retardant properties were observed. The results show that cy-ep-Ph-POSS is composed of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing 6, 8, and 10 silicon atoms. The tensile strength and flexural modulus of EP/cy-ep-Ph-POSS composites are increased by 16% and 10% than those of pure EP. The initial decomposition temperature and the residue of the composites are increased, whose limiting oxygen index reaches 27.6%. Significant improvement in molten droplets during UL-94 is observed. The peak-heat release rate is decreased by 49%. Therefore, cy-ep-Ph-POSS has high application value in improving flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EP.
