Abstract

We employ phase-field method to investigate the evolution of domain patterns in hexagonal systems. YMnO3 and Mg-Cd alloy are employed as representative examples. The improper ferroelectric YMnO3 exhibits antiphase domain structures with six types of domains that connect at vortices and antivortices. The domain wall network evolves through vortex-antivortex annihilation. The ordered Mg-Cd displays straight domain walls between three domain ferroelastic variants, forming spatially hierarchical three-pointed stars at different length scales.
