Abstract

Based on the analysis of the efficiency measurement methods of the traditional turbocharger turbine, a new approach is proposed, which uses an 'auxiliary' turbocharger instead of the traditional cooler to achieve the self-cyclic loading. The feasibility of this method is verified by both 1D simulation and experiment. The results show that with the new approach, the measurable turbine efficiency characteristic is extended. The measurement rig is simpler and compact and testing operation becomes convenient. This will be beneficial for turbine design, production as well as matching between turbocharger and ICE. Using 1D simulation, the principle of 'auxiliary' turbocharger selection is analyzed and a new auxiliary turbocharger is proposed. The simulation results show that the dissipation power by this new auxiliary turbocharger increases by 60% compared with the original ones.
