Abstract

A programmable multi-mode RS Codec module in a concatenating coding scheme for satellite communication is studied in this paper. FPGA is used as the kernel of the implementation, while some ASICs are used as a necessary assistant. The total module includes RS codec unit, interleaver and deinterleaver unit, scrambler and descrambler unit and frame synchronization unit. The module can be programmed on-line to change the working mode in order to meet the requirements of IESS 308/309/310 that includes many specifications about the different service types and data rates. With the implement architecture of combining FPGA with ASICs, the size of the circuit is greatly decreased, the flexibility is dramatically increased and the stability is further strengthened. Furthermore, the module is based on the software radio concept and can be easily integrated into the whole software radio modem.
