Abstract

A flexible ligand bis(7-methyl-1,8-naphthyridine-2-ylamino)methane (L), having κ4-chelating and κ2-bridging modes, and its intriguing structural complexes of Zn(II) with μ-OH, κ1-OAc, μ-κ1-OAc and μ- κ2-OAc ligands, [Zn2(L)2(OH)](ClO 4)3 (1), [Zn4(L)2(OAc) 6(OH)2]·CH2Cl2 (2·CH2Cl2) and [Zn5(L) 2(OAc)10]n·4nH2O (3·4H2O) were synthesized and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. These compounds exhibited intense blue fluorescent emissions with a λmax in the range of 380-410 nm in CH 2Cl2, CH3CN and CH3OH solutions, and solid-state emissions centered at 416, 463, 490 and 451 nm were observed for the compounds L, 1, 2 and 3 at room temperature, respectively. The investigated fluorescence properties of L associated with various metal ions showed that the fluorescence enhancement of L with Cd(II) was more sensitive than with other interfering cations.
