Abstract

Based on the mixed lubrication condition in a small Wankel engine, friction loss prediction models of the triangle roller end surface, the apex seal and the bearing were built, respectively.Next, these models were validated by the experimental friction losses of the triangle roller end surface, the apex seal and the bearing under motored condition. Finally, the friction loss of the small Wankel engine under working condition was predicted with the above models. The results show that the friction loss caused by the triangle roller end surface is the largest contributor to the total friction loss of the small Wankel engine. It accounts for about 60% of the total friction loss and the ratio hardly varies with operation speed. The asperity contact is the dominant factor to the friction loss caused by the triangle roller end surface and the apex seal.
