N2 - ISO 6358, established for the representation and measurement of flow-rate characteristics for pneumatic components in 1989, has two problems to improve. One is that its characteristics representation, theoretically based on a restriction, is not applicable to some components such as silencer, speed control valve. Another is that its measurement method under a steady flow requires much more air and time. In this paper, firstly an extended characteristics representation is introduced and its application to silencers and speed control valves is discussed. Then, an alternative measurement method is proposed by measuring the pressure response in an isothermal chamber during discharge. Compared with the ISO method, the proposed method has advantages of little air consumption and short measurement time. The extended characteristics representation and the new measurement method have been proposed to ISO for upgrading the current ISO standard.
