Abstract
This Paper analyzes the switching characteristics of single mode optical fiber. In the dispersion fiber not only the switching signal will delay, but also the switching speed will be limited. The formula for calculating switching time (rise time or fall time) is given. The results show, that switching time is proportional to square root of absolute value of fiber dispersion, and is proportional to square root of fiber length, too. In 1 km G.652 optical fiber operating at 1.55 μm, the switching time is about 7ps. This time is the final limit for switching speed of a switching element with two optical levers constructed by this kind of fiber.
