abstract = "An unequal power assignment strategy for the up-link of a 3G system is proposed in this paper, which aims to maximize the admission capacity of wireless communication systems. Through the analysis of multiple access interference (MAI) for the up-link, the formula to calculate the optimal power ratio for multimedia traffic is deduced. The performance of the novel strategy on the 3GPP-FDD system with integrated speech and data traffic has been investigated and compared with the traditional equal power assignment (EPA) strategy. Simulation results reveal that unequal power assignment outperforms EPA. The application of the unequal power assignment strategy in an adaptive multi-rate (AMR) system is investigated. Simulation results show that different AMR modes have a different influence on admission capacity in 3G systems.",
