Abstract

Synthesis of nanometer-sized carbide powders using petroleum coke as carbon source during the mechanical alloying is explored. The synthesis procedure involves milling of petroleum coke powder with elemental Ti and Si powders, respectively. The measurement results of X-ray diffraction and BET indicated that cubic TiC and hexagonal α-SiC were synthesized in the order of nanometer.
