Abstract

A stearic acid terminated waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane (SWHBPU) was synthesized using stearic acid and waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane (WHBPU). The effect of amount of stearic acid on the blocking reaction efficiency was studied. The structure was characterized by infrared spectrum (IR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectra (13C-NMR) and faculties degree analysis. The thermal properties were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results show that the hydroxyl value of SWHBPU reduces to 30.09 mg KOH/g with stearic acid excess of 40%. Both of the hyperbranched polyurethanes have a large number of hyperbranched-structures, while SWHBPU represents lower Tg and higher starting decomposition temperature compared to WHBPU.
