Abstract
The energetic binder poly(2, 2-dinitropropyl methacrylate) was synthesized by the free radical polymerization of 2, 2-dinitropropyl methacrylate (DNPMA) in toluene by using azobisiosbutyronitrile as initiator. The effect of initiator concentration on polymer yield was investigated and the polymerization rate equation was determined by experiment. The structure and thermal properties of poly (2, 2-dinitropropyl methacrylate) were also characterized by FT-IR, 1HNMR, UV, DSC and TGA measurements. The results show that the polymerization rate equation for DNPMA is Rp=k[M]1.22[I]0.47. This demonstrates that the chain termination reaction is according to the bimolecular termination mode. The larger polymer yield is obtained at a higher initiator concentration. The thermal decomposition temperature of poly (2, 2-dinitropropyl acrylate) is 238°C. This binder is a thermally stable polymer.
