Abstract

Swirler, a new device to induce intake swirl in non-swirl intake port diesel engine, is introduced in this paper. The fundamental characteristics of this new device are disclosed through analysis of the swirl ratio in cylinder and flow rate coefficient under steady flow condition. The intake swirl flow field measured by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique is analyzed. In order to find out its influence on working performances of the engine, the tests on the single cylinder engine has been carried out. The results show that this new device can induce intake swirl at low or medium swirl ratio in non-swirl intake port engine and improve fuel economy and emissions.
