Abstract

A process was developed to prepare pH-sensitive guar gum/poly(acrylic acid) (GG/PAA) semi-interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels. The influence of feed composition and pH in the swelling medium on swelling dynamics was investigated. Results show: the maximum swelling ratio and diffusion exponent n of hydrogels decrease with the increase GG amount, but increase with enhanced AA amount and pH. The swelling processes follow Schott second order dynamic equation. GG/PAA semi-IPNs are expected to be good candidates for the carriers for colon-specific drug delivery system.
