Abstract

This article introduced SweepEase, an exergaming desk, which is designed to be a solution against Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) in the office staff. The whole system was developed with motion gaming through desktop projections, which were used to simulate falling leaves and make the users perform the movements that are necessary to sweep the desktop. These movements helped ameliorate the effects of the prolonged usage of keyboard and mouse. Our research has proved that the combination of exergaming with desktop projections, not only made it more user-friendly and engaging, but also showed that the effect of upper limb exercises during micro-breaks was improved, thus leading to a reduction of RSIs. By applying peripheral interaction theory, SweepEase boosts workplace wellness programs and spark employees to adopt a more engaged way of managing their health. The research findings indicated that systems like SweepEase can instigate active participation of employees during the workday, and this may lead to a more energetic and healthier office environment.
