Abstract

Protecting behavior of nano-Cu additive with 20 nm was investigated by four kinds of experiments. Anti-wear and antifriction behavior of nano-Cu additive in different lubrication oils were tested. The action mechanism of nano-Cu additive was discussed. The results indicated that nano-Cu additive could form protecting film on worn surface by frictional wear. The protecting film was composed of small Cu islands with 0.1 μm Cu particle size, which has low shearing strength. The protecting film could reduce adhesive wear and abrasive wear. Nano-Cu additive in lubrication oil exhibited wonderful resistance to wear and friction, comparing with base lubrication oil 650SN and tank lubrication oil 50CC, the friction coefficient can be reduced by 48% and 40% respectively, the wear trace width can be decreased by 21% and 33% respectively. The protecting film could repair the tiny hole and damage, so nano-Cu additive in lubrication oil exhibited good protection and repairing behavior.
