Source Enumeration by Integrating Toeplitz Reconstruction with Elbow-based Method

Abstract

An improved Toeplitz-constrained elbow-based source enumeration (EBSE) algorithm is proposed for robust estimation of the number of sources in adverse environments. First, the Toeplitz structure is exploited to modify the covariance of the received data; subsequently, eigenvalue decomposition is performed to extract the eigenvalues, which serve as the input to the ensuing EBSE algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves stable source enumeration under conditions of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), small snapshots, and coherent sources, significantly enhancing performance at only a modest computational cost.
