Abstract

Switched Ethernet is now making inroads in industrial communication. But different from many other applications, industrial real-time data requires the network technology to guarantee deterministic transfer delay. In the present paper, priority mechanism defined in IEEE802.1p is introduced into both Ethernet switches and communication nodes. A priority-based protocol stack and promoted switched architecture is accessed. Finally the effectiveness of the prioritized Ethernet for delivering real-time is verified by a network simulation using OPNET modeler.
