Abstract

Precursor powders of TiN-cordierite composites were prepared by sol-gel method. TiN-cordierite composite powders were obtained by calcining precursor powders under NH3 at 1250°C for 3 h. X-ray diffraction shows that the synthesis of cordierite and in situ nitridation of TiO2 were fulfilled simultaneously. Energy dispersive spectrometer shows that TiN are uniformly dispersed in cordierite matrix. Relationship between TiN content and bending strength of composites was studied. Result shows that TiN can enhance the bending strength of cordierite significantly. When TiN is 15% (in volume) in cordierite, the bending strength of cordierite reaches the maximum value of 108 MPa, which is much higher than pure cordierite bending strength by 28 MPa.
