Abstract

The shearing stress and apparent viscosity of electrorheological (ER) fluids can be changed as the variation of applied electric field strength. ER fan clutch developed based on this characteristic can adjust the fan speed continuously according to the cooling requirement of engine so as to realize the aim of energy saving and noise reduction. According to the reasonable properties matching between fan and ER clutch and also the torques under different transmission rate, the performance requirement to ER fluids used in clutch was described through graphic analysis method in this paper. In addition, the case of speed modulation capability decline at high speed was analyzed with polarization theory.
