Abstract

In order to analyze small signal voltage stability in the power systems, a modified Phillips-Heffron (P-H) model based on single generator single motor system is proposed with dynamics of induction motor and generator. It is used to derive a voltage oscillation damping factor γ, while analytic form of γ illustrates the damping brought out by induction motor. Compared with preliminary P-H model under static load model assumption, it is evident that the induction motor plays an important role in small signal instability mode and its existence has a tendency to eliminate oscillation. The modified P-H model and γ can be used to explain negative damping phenomena coming from coexistence of slow-acting excitation systems and large capacitor compensation.
