Abstract

Regarding the current increment of LEO space debris and its negative effect on space missions in this environment, a new removal mechanism is proposed in this paper. In the first place, this research discusses an innovative low-cost drag sail for space junk deorbiting. After that, the junk capture method and the sail deployment mechanism are introduced. An orbital simulation of the deorbiting maneuver is studied in order to understand the effect of the proposed sub-system in terms of feasibility and operation time. Details of the drag sail components and assembly, mass estimation and the calculated orbital parameters during the deorbiting phase are included.
