Abstract

In this paper, we developed a prototype of a mobile interactive museum guide system based on augmented reality technology, which consists of a Netbook equipped with a webcam. This museum guidance system can automatically find and retrieve multimedia information about the objects of interest to the visitors in an intuitive way. With a higher frame rate, the system has obtained a satisfied object recognition rate when compared with state-of-the-arts such as the feature recognition method based on SIFT detector and BBF. This is achieved by using GPUSIFT detector and randomized trees for feature extraction and recognition, respectively. The field experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can be effectively used for museum guidance and digital reconstruction of heritage sites.
