Abstract

The existent measuring methods of turbocharger mechanical loss were analyzed, it was pointed out that in the heat balance method, heat transfer and dissipation losses were ignored and the dynamic operating conditions were not considered, and in the transient condition method the aerodynamic loss and power consumption of the compressor and the turbine were not included. The methods to calculate various power consumption and aerodynamic loss during deceleration test of the compressor and the turbine were reviewed, a new method combined the theoretical calculation with experimental measurement to assess the turbocharger mechanical loss power was proposed. Based on the improved turbocharger test system, measurements of the mechanical loss power were performed for model J60 turbocharger. The data obtained demonstrates that using the new method and equipment, measuring precision increases by more than 10% compared with the transient condition method.
